Background of the Ministry

The Ministry of Trade and Industry was established after the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) but over the years, the name and shape of the Ministry has changed several times from Commerce and Supply to  Trade, industry, Investment and East African Community Affairs. Based on the South Sudan’s  Transitional Constitution 2011  as amended, the ministry’s name changed to “Ministry of Trade and Industry”. 

It is therefore expected to develop policies aimed at imports substitution programme, creating an effective, efficient and self-reliant  economy, encouraging free market and ensure that monopolistic tendencies are prohibited, “facilitation of the development of the private sector, particularly the indigenous entrepreneurs “has to be encouraged as enshrined in the tendencies 

It is an important tool and vehicle for the realization of the government’s major objectives of economic development,job creation  and reduction of poverty. 

 The declaration of independence and the promulgation of the new Constitution, Article 55 and 96 and Schedule A, B, C and D of the Transitional Constitution delineates the mandate of the National Government and that of the State Governments.

In line with these provisions, the Ministry of Trade and Industry at all levels, will strive to promote trade, industrial development and create conducive environment for businesses and investment.

  • Coordination and implementation of National, Regional and international Trade Laws, Negotiations and Agreements.
  •  Promotion and Regulation of trade in goods and services.

The Ministry of Trade & Industry is the lead policy advisor to government on trade, industrial and private sector development with responsibility for the formulation and implementation of policies for the promotion, growth and development of domestic and international trade and industry.
